Stories of Resourcefulness & Perseverance

Our friend Bekah* was a single mother of two who contacted ECHOS last year when she was living in a campground—in an uninsulated camper. “It was cold,” Bekah shared. “It was a very old camper, thanks to my employer. But it wasn’t insulated, and everything froze after the first snow.” When the campground closed up for the season, the electric was shut off. “We had no electric, no running water, nothing,” she continued. “These were not good living conditions for our family of three.” Bekah and her family were, quite literally, facing street-level homelessness. Bekah heard about ECHOS and made a call where she was introduced to Heather, ECHOS’ Housing Case Manager. With the assistance of ECHOS and community providers, a suitable home was found in Elizabethtown. Bekah’s children are thriving in school! She says that, despite the fear, “There was never a point where I felt like it wouldn’t work out because I knew I always had Heather to look out for me.” With the guidance of intensive housing case management, Bekah was able to become financially independent within four months of enrolling in the program! “It felt great to me when I was able to pay my rent in full, pay my utilities, and pay all of my bills!” she shared. Bekah is now an independent business owner and a thriving member of the community, where she maintains independence. “I have the confidence in myself that I can do this,” she said. “My kids have found a sense of community, too. Heather is my friend, and I want to be a friend of ECHOS! It is such a great place, and I would be happy to volunteer so I can be that support system to someone else!”
